Week 1 (19/180)
Week one started off with me learning about everything the State Troopers and all of the other employees do on a daily basis every day at work. I was also able to do a tour of the barrack to see every purpose of all of the rooms inside of the building. On my first day, I was assigned to ride along with Trooper Eckridge on the road. The first thing we did was go to court hearings that he had been assigned to from traffic stops. After the hearings, we went to a 911 from the Joseph House in Salisbury from a man who supposedly had an unknown baby show up on his doorsteps. With further investigation, hours later we found out that is was his baby and he was arrested for a false police report.
On the second day I rode along with Trooper Hopkins, where I learned how a LiDAR (laser) gun works, which reaches up to 2,000ft. to catch cars that are exceeding the speed limit and how writing citations and warnings work. After a few traffic stops we headed to a 911 call from a tractor that had nearly flipped on Route 50.
On my third day I rode along with the Criminal Enforcement Division (CED) where they had a house search warrant to seize technology from someones apartment who was accused of withholding child pornography. I was able to listen to how Miranda Rights work in person and what is done with seized technology from a warrant.
On my fourth day I rode along with Trooper Perdue. I was able to learn how common 911 hangups happen and how important they are even if they call was a mistake.
